There’s a relatively well-known quote attributed to Woody Allen; “If you aren’t failing, you aren’t trying hard enough.” In photography, failure is the norm, embrace it. I made a tutorial video that I hope helps you be OK with failure:

Let me be clear. 90% of what I shoot sucks…..period. Almost never do I happen upon a scene and take a great photo. Usually, I go on a hunting expedition by changing camera angle, using off-camera flash, and anything else I can think of to get the shot. And many times I don’t get the shot, which is of course very frustrating, discouraging, depressing…..pick one.

Words of Wisdom From The Master

I saw an interview with none other than Joe McNally who, as some of you might know, knows a thing or 2 about photography. When asked that annoying and cliche’d question; “What would you tell a young person just getting started?” He said, I kid you not, “…get used to failure”!! He then went on to describe how tough it is to get a good result, and how many times he just doesn’t get a good result. Holy s**t! OK, his bar is extraordinarily high, because his “good result” is nothing short of amazing to the rest of us……but still…..I almost fell out of my chair when he said that!
